If your heat pump or air conditioner is over 10 years old you may want to consider replacing it. Here’s why:
The last ten years has resulted in many changes to heat pumps. The most important change is the reduction of electrical power needed to operate a heat pump. The recent increases in electric utility rates makes that an important feature. Based on calculations using information from the U.S. Dept. of Rnergy (and assuming a 5% annual increase in utility rates) a new high efficiency heat pump, 3-ton size would save $1,013 per year. A 4-ton size would save $1,289 per year.
The possibility of a major breakdown for a 10-year old heat pump increases substantially every passing year. Typical costs of such breakdowns are expensive often costing $400 to $2,000. The interruption of cooling or heating the home is another consideration.
The savings in electrical use also have a positive effect on our environment. The 3-ton example has the same impact as removing 10 cars from our highway for one year. The 4-ton example is equivalent to removing 13 cars for one year.
